Peter Nolasco

Peter Nolasco
(c. 1189–c. 1256)
   Saint and Order Founder.
Little certain is known of the life of St Peter Nolasco. He is thought to have been born in either Barcelona or Languedoc and to have taken part in the crusade against the Albigensians. He is remembered as the founder, with raymond of peñafort, of the Mercedarian Order (the Order of Our Lady of Mercy). The purpose of the new order was to tend the sick and to ransom Christians who had been captured by the Muslims. It was approved by Pope Gregory IX in 1235 and Peter himself is said to have been imprisoned in Algiers and to have ransomed four hundred captives. The order spread from Europe to the New World and today members work in parishes, schools and charities.
